Do you have love handles you wish would disappear? Do you have clothes that are too tight or are no longer comfortable to wear? Do you puff going up a flight of stairs? Or maybe you find it harder with each passing year to do up your shoelaces? Fat gain and decline in fitness only sneaks up on us if we ignore these little tell-tale signs along the way and do nothing about them.
Now, I know first-hand that fat gain is not always solely due to excessive food consumption. Stress, hormone imbalance, illness, depression, many things can cause our bodies to react by storing fat just as quickly as emotional eating can. No matter the cause, there is always a way to over-come it. How? ....
You find your why!
Of course it’s no guarantee that if you eat healthfully and exercise that you’ll live longer, avoid illness and be happier. But it certainly could help! Plus, wouldn’t it be good to feel amazing in your own skin all the time?
My “why” came to me at just 17 years old. My mum had been terminally ill for around 5 years by that stage. She was obese and house bound (due all the medication she was on). Nonetheless, I was growing up and getting my life together. Part of growing up, of course, is learning to take care of yourself. I realised I’d never done much exercise (I wasn’t into sports at school, I was into boys ;-)), I was horribly unfit, a little chubby and I sure as hell didn’t want to be like my mum. So I joined a gym and never looked back.
That “why” has been my motivation to take good care of my health ever since. Seeing mum weak, obese, depressed and completely dependent on a myriad of drugs scarred me for life. But I took the lesson from it and turned it into my strength. I know not everyone is going to get a big slap in the face wake-up call like I did but there will be something in your life that you can use to drive you.
Now that I have a child, I feel it even more keenly! I was taught what NOT to do when it came to health and fitness and I’ve fought like hell to turn my life around. But I’m gonna make sure my little guy is properly educated when it comes to nutrition and exercise. When he’s old enough, I will explain to him why his Grandmother passed before he was born and that is why Mummy wants us to eat healthy food most of the time (note that…most of the time!) and do fun things together like riding bikes and going for walks.
So, I implore you to look at your life and find your why. Why do you want to be the healthiest version of yourself that you can possibly be? Once you have it, use it every day to help you choose better options. Vegetables instead of fries, full fat yogurt instead of ice cream, 30 minutes exercise instead of 2 hours in front of the TV, going for a walk instead of eating when you’re bored. You get the idea.
With the proper motivation, your why, you can easily create new, healthy habits that can last you a life time.
