Are you into the whole raw, GF, Vegan this, Paleo that thing? No doubt you think that because I’m a personal trainer who also practices and teaches yoga that I must be. Well, I couldn’t be farther from it.
A little joke Hubby and I have whenever we bring home a take away meal or treat:
Hubby - “What you got there?”
Me - “Raw monkey balls with a side of Kale enema. Would you like some?”
Hubby - “Hmmm that sounds amazing but I’m doing a juice fast today.”
No disrespect meant if that’s what you’re into but we like to enjoy the food we’re eating, as well as it being good for us. Give me steak, vegetables, and a baked potato with butter. Or some Chicken curry and a garlic naan.
“OMG no! I’ll get fat if I eat potatoes and naan!!!” I hear you exclaim. No you won’t! Eat it if you feel like it. Eat it if you’re hungry. And stop when you’re full. That’s it! That’s the secret to maintaining the figure you want without missing out on a thing.
Back in my obsessive-compulsive clean eating, over exercising days, I would’ve eaten slugs if you’d told me they’d help me lose fat and gain muscle. I guess that made me Paleo? Anyways, I looked amazing but felt like crap every waking moment. And I was overwhelmed by stress, worrying about what food I could eat next. I didn’t understand the effect the constant dieting was having on my mental state and my emotions. There is an easier way!
Let’s just take away the labels and eat real food. It really isn’t that hard. If you choose to be vegan or vegetarian for a particular reason, more power to you. It’s quite possible that your blood type or genealogy make that the best way of eating for you. If it works for you, that’s all that matters. But don’t do it because it’s trendy.
A popular blogger I follow recently denounced vegetarianism and I think I actually cheered aloud when I read her posts! Not because she was giving it up. Nooo. But because she was getting in tune with her body and could feel that vegetarianism actually didn’t suit her. She was doing what her body needed and I think that is wonderful!
I guess what I’m saying is, that just because a particular way of eating is trendy right now, doesn’t mean that it was meant for you. Learn what YOUR BODY needs and give it that. Understand what treat foods are and how to balance the odd treat out with proper, balanced meals. And don’t think that just because something’s made from raw monkey balls and kale, that it isn’t also chock full of agave syrup and coconut-bloody-sugar!
If my story helps just one person feel better about themselves and learn to nourish instead of punish themselves, then I’ll be a happy gal.
